An Afghani-American mowed down 15 people, killing 1 and injuring the rest, in San Francisco yesterday. This San Francisco Chronicle article provides a detailed timeline. Malkin has been all over it since the beginning as has Bookworm. Malkin and LGF both noticed that one of the incidents took place in front of the Jewish Community center, a fact much of the media has neglected to mention.
While that Chronicle piece will give you all the details, here's the gist:

She said he was bald, with a mustache, wearing a gray sport jacket. He showed no sign of injury. Police identified him as Omeed Aziz Popal, 29, of Fremont, and said he would be booked on 14 counts of attempted murder.

Let me first say that so far we have no evidence of terror or a hate crime here, along the lines of the Seattle Muslim terrorist who shot a bunch of Jews, killing one "lone gunman" or the "Tarheel Terrorist", but at this point it's definitely a possibility. I mean, some straight faced guy returns from his arranged marriage in Afghanistan and somehow being upset from that sets him on a straight faced road rage mission? Aside from the fact that I never by the "insanity defense" anyway, I just don't see anything that would set this guy off to travel to this neighborhood and deliberately go after dozens of pedestrians, clearly intent on killing them. However HotAir is reporting that the man recently went missing after claiming a desire to kill his family.

Beyond that odd report, this Mercury News piece quotes two of his shocked cousins:

Omeed Aziz Popal, 29, who sources said was being held by the San Francisco police, was normally a kind and gentle person, said Hamid Nekrawesh, 43, a first cousin in Fremont.

But a recent trip to Afghanistan to participate in an arranged marriage could have caused him a lot of stress, Nekrawesh said.

``He was a very respectful, quiet, nice guy,'' Nekrawesh said. ``I've never seen him do anything violent.''

Zarghona Ramish of San Jose, who also identified herself as Popal's cousin, said he had been having strange dreams since returning a month ago from Afghanistan.

Popal's cousin, Zarghona Ramish, said he was nervous before his wedding. He had been having bad dreams, and "he thought the devil was coming to kill him," Ramish said.

Nekrawesh said Popal's father, Najib, sold goods at various Bay Area flea markets.

I did a quick search that didn't turn up any terror or fundamental Islam ties, but reveals that Ramish was reprimanded with a "Desist and Refrain Order" by the State of California for running a pyramid scheme with a bunch of other woman with middle eastern (sounding) names, including one from Fremont also with the last name Aziz. I suppose it's possible that this is a different woman, but I think unlikely.

A search on the other cousin, Nekrawesh, has a handful of links, the first of which goes to this photo of him (or someone by the same exact name) on the website of the Woodland Estates Community Association.

One of the main links on the Woodland Estates site is "an Afghan bio", which takes you to a page where Nekrawesh has written what he calls his life story. It details his young life in Afghanistan, up to his business dealings in California today. He seems to be happy to be living in America and a nice enough guy. I haven't read the entire thing yet, but I did find this bit interesting:

In search of some good night sleeps, my wife and I are always involved in some sort of community services. She volunteers for senior immigrants; help them with their housing, disability benefits, doctor appointments, and other daily transactions. We also volunteer for battered woman and children, some political campaigns such as Pete Stark, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, and some local politician friends.

Obviously this doesn't imply anything about terror, I just think it's kind of funny that he volunteers for the campaigns of some of the nuttiest leftist Democrats in Washington.

I heard Lauren Green report the story on Fox about a half an hour ago, she didn't mention his name or his recent trip to Afghanistan which I was a little disappointed by. Of course a trip to Afghanistan doesn't necessarily mean anything, but given the world we live in today, I think it at least deserves mentioning. I just hope that we're able to get at least a little bit of honest reporting about this as the story develops over the next few days.
