Howard Dean: Middle East Crisis Wouldn't Have Occurred With Dems In Power

At the end of my earlier post on today's Israel/Hezbollah events, I mentioned that I'd blog about Howard Dean's latest outburst, so here goes...

You probably already know that as a native Vermonter (and one who just moved back), my favorite whipping boy on the left is Howard Dean. It would be a full time job to really blog on this nut, so I don't always get around to mocking him everytime I'd like to, but I feel today's story demands to be passed along.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, perhaps realizing he hadn't grabbed headlines with any overly idiotic remarks lately and angry at being overshadowed by the Middle East conflict, tossed out a few memorable lines to "activists" at San Diego University Saturday.

The article opens this way:

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean accused President Bush last night of being weak on national defense and absent in the escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

In remarks at San Diego State University, Dean urged activists to fan across the nation – including deep into the heart of Republican-rich “red” states – to tell voters that Bush has failed as president – including in national defense, which Republicans tout as their core strength.

“There are a lot of things we can say when we knock on the door (of voters),” Dean told hundreds at San Diego State's Open Air Theatre.

We'll get to his comments about national defense and Israel in a moment, but let's look at a couple other things first. Dean's plan is to have a bunch of his clones...... knock on doors(?).. and tell people that Bush has failed as a President. Please knock on my door so I can see the light. I mean, I know I would see the error of my ways if only a Jr. Howard Dean would show up and tell me that President Bush is a failure.

What an amazing DNC chairman Dean has developed in to, huh? Yeah, sure at first everyone mocked him for his failures with fund raising, getting left in the dust by the RNC.. But Dean put his remarkable political genius to work and came up with a plan that has officially locked every future election for the Democrats... knocking on doors and TELLING us that Bush is a failure. Rumor has it that such an ingenius plan has shamed Karl Rove in to retiring from politics.

I can only see one small problem with Dean's plan however. Now follow me here, because I may be wrong, but I believe there is a term limit for the POTUS right? Something like 8 years I believe, and then he can't run again. My math may be a little off, but I believe at the end of this term, the President will have reached that term limit and won't be able to run again. So I'm just not sure if running against President Bush is necessarily the wisest choice, but hey, I'm not Howard Dean right? His political calculations have never failed before.

By the way, if anyone has been able to keep track of RNC vs. DNC fundraising, I'd love to have the numbers for an update to this post. I assume he's still lagging way behind, but either way I'll post it.

One more quick note, before we move on... Yes Howie, there are a lot of things you can say when you knock on the door. But remember, there are a lot of things we can say too.

Deans gums flapped a bit more, and this fell out:

“You know, people say the Republicans are tough on defense. How can you be tough on defense if five years after 9/11, Osama bin Laden is still at large, the Iranians are about to get nuclear weapons, North Korea's quadrupled their nuclear weapons stash. . . .

Oh, you got us there Howard. One question though - How was it that after 8 years and many attacks that Clinton didn't get him, even when he was actually going to be served up on a silver platter? I'll concede Iran a little, but what could have been done? I doubt you're suggesting bombing them back in to the stone age. As for N. Korea, wasn't it your guy, Bill Clinton, who made a deal with N. Korea to stop building nukes and then turned around and twiddled his thumbs while they did it anyway? You must have something better than this Dr. Dean?!

The RNC never likes to lash out at Dean the way I do, they simply sweep him under the rug as an insignificant overgrown college hippy that he is:

“Howard Dean is the chief spokesman of a party that has highlighted obstruction and hasn't provided real answers that matter to the American people,” Bounds said.

“He's not going to be able to come into San Diego and disguise the fact that the Democratic Party doesn't have real answers for the issues that are important to the American people.”

By the way, the article notes that Al Franken introduced Dean at the event. I should have known he brought his A game for a reason.

The article goes on to quote Dean repeating some of the usual talking points, and then he touches on current events:

In an apparent reference to Israeli military action deep inside Lebanon, Dean said:

“If you think what's going on in the Middle East today would be going on if the Democrats were in control, it wouldn't, because we would have worked day after day after day to make sure we didn't get where we are today. We would have had the moral authority that Bill Clinton had when he brought together the Northern Irish and the IRA, when he brought together the Israelis and the Palestinians.”

So because Bush was elected, the Middle East has erupted? First of all, can you imagine the outrage if someone on the right said that about someone on the left? I know, it's kind of old because day after day we see outrageous statements from the highest ranking Democrats, and they continually get a pass from the media. But when Trent Lott tells Strom Thurmond the countries is launched back in to the civil war and Lott is forced to resign his seat.

I'm not actually that upset at how over the line this statement is, and how he's not being torn apart in the media over it. I'm just shocked at the stupidity. What an idiotic statement to make. Who would buy something so stupid. Why don't you also tell everyone that if Democrats were in power we'd all be millionaires to you clown!? I just can't comprehend what a complete idiot this guy is. Oh wait, he was talking to liberal activists, perhaps some people are stupid enough to buy it.

As I mentioned, we see the double standard of "who can say what" play out every day, but I just remembered something. Didn't the left and the media freak out when Cheney, talking about how Kerry would treat terrorism as a law enforcement issue, said essentially that a President Kerry would leave us more prone to an attack? Didn't the AP take the quote totally out of context and make it seem like Cheney said "elect Kerry, get attacked", without explaining what was actually said. Weren't there demands on the left for apologies, etc.? But I digress.

Anyway Dean, keep up the go.... well, keep up the work. And please, no solicitors.

***UPDATE***
Expose the Left also finds Dean's comments beyond idiotic.

Yes, I agree that Dean's comment is pretty stupid. Dean's claim is about as stupid as Cheney's recent claim that the Bush administration's policies have undoubtably (I, know, not good english, Cheney's word) prevented post 9-11 terrorist attacks in the USA. At least Cheney, being a political science major, has an excuse. Dean has no excuse. MD's are suppose to be the cream of the crop.

I don't recall this specific Cheney statement, but it sounds pretty proper to me, and something that virtually everyone would have to agree on. We HAVE rounded up at least a few dozen terrorist plotters that the public knows about (and who knows about how many others). I'm just confused how you could compare the two statements. Dean's is a baseless claim that anyone can see is just insane (like I said, why doesn't he also say that if Democrats were in power we'd all be millionaires, because it is as wild a claim... just to say that having a "D" next to the party in power's name would have stopped the Israel situation is beyond idiotic. But saying that the administration's policies have stopped terrorist attacks is demonstrably true... what don't you get? We have rounded up terrorists and stopped them from attacking. Cheney wins, you lose.

Randy, just who are these few dozen terrorists that we have rounded up? Former attorney general Ashcroft called a news conference during a European trip to announce the arrest of that high school dropout ,Padilla, who apparently had sketches of a dirty bomb on him. Now Padilla is not even being charged with a dirty bomb plot. Then there was this group of American born Arabs from some suberb of Buffalo that were suspected to be a sleeper cell and jailed. The police chief of the suburb (Lackawanna?) stated on TV that the group must have been in a real deep sleep. We just heard about this group of criminals in Miami that were offered guns, money, vehicles, and explosives if they swore allegance to Al Qaeda and blew up some buildings. Various Moslems in the USA were accused of money laundering or raising funds for various terrorist group abroad. The only real catch that I know of is the guy that was arrested crossing the Canadian border into Washington state with a trunkload of explosives. Attribute that bust to an alert border guard. Common Randy, the Bush administration would be really crowing loudly about the breakup of any credible threats. I almost forgot about the Mousawi trial.
Don't get me wrong now. I am glad that all of these guys are in jail, but are they credible terrorists? I don't think so.

Off the top those are a few. I'll give you a couple more, but in naming even one you've proven my point... You blasted Cheney for saying that administration policies have stopped post 9/11 attacks. You may not think that these weasels we've busted are "big time" enough, but one would have said the same thing about the terrorists who've committed the most "successful" terror attacks around the world.

Now how about the guys who wanted to attack the NY Subway? How about the ongoing investigation, again leaked to and by the media, in which there have been some arrests, to attack the rail system between NJ and NYC? How about the guy who was trying to buy, I think it was a rocket launcher from an undercover agent. How about the Lodi crew?

And no the administration wouldn't necessarily be touting huge "gets"... Imagine that they're trying to knock down dominos.. They don't want to come out saying "we got Abu (or whoever)", when they want to interrogate him and track down his associates. Making big news out of it sends them in to deeper hiding and causes them to change their tactics (which is why everyone is pissed about the all the NSA leaks and the bank account tracking prog.s)

Don't know why I bother, because if you don't already get it, then it's because you're making a concious decision not to.
