Comedy Central Delivers Weak Excuse For Pulling South Park Episode

Here's the latest on the whole South Park vs. Scientology battle. Here's the necessary background information if you're not up to date on this.

Anyway, the only new development is that Comedy Central has come up with an excuse for why they pulled the episode, but I'm not buying it.

A Comedy Central spokesman said Friday that the network pulled the controversial episode to make room for two shows featuring Hayes.

"In light of the events of earlier this week, we wanted to give Chef an appropriate tribute by airing two episodes he is most known for," the spokesman said.

Sure...

By the way, reader Rob sends a link for you to be able to watch the episode online if you haven't already seen it. Note that in the first minute, because Stan wants to save his money for a bike rather than spend on laser tag, Cartman eventually says "fine then, be a Jew", and Cartman and the other boys ditch Stan. Of course this isn't even a fraction of the mocking of Jews and Christians they do, but I thought it was funny that I just started the episode and already they said something like that.

It should be noted that while you may laugh at how crazily that episode portrays scientology, it's actually accurate.

UPDATE - 3/20/06

Commenter RW in the previous post's comments provides this link to a Fox News gossip column which attempts to say Hayes didn't quit. I don't see anything in this article (so I'm not going to excerpt much) other than what seems like a desperate Hayes trying to stop the bleeding of a public outcry against his hypocritical behavior... Can you believe this:

Hayes did not suffer paralysis, but the mild stroke may have affected his speech and his memory. He’s been having home therapy since it happened.

That certainly begs the question of who issued the statement that Hayes was quitting "South Park" now because it mocked Scientology four months ago. If it wasn’t Hayes, then who would have done such a thing?

Other than that it's just all about how 'He couldn't/wouldn't have quit', but offers no evidence. I mean what was this all about then:

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

First Scientology®Is EXTREMELY litigous. They sued the IRS for several years to avoid paying taxes since they are a 'religion' and actually exhauasted them and won.If you want some info on Scientology® from former scientologists® theres a website titled xenu.net .Of course Xenu is the name of the intergalactic warlord who dropped millions of frozen aliens into the volcanoes of Hawaii. No seriously.Scientologists are amazingly thin skinned and vicious and would like to point out that they have the freedom of religion and would like people to stop mocking them.Nowhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights does it afford the individual any form of respect for any nutball religion or to not mock it.You are only afforded the right to practice it.I also want to point out that Scientology is banned in Germany,Italy,England,Spain and Australia.I feel like I missed one but you get the idea.Scientology sued these governements for religious persecution and even better they were upset they had to pay taxes. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to call my lawyer to mount a defense.

Rob, the registered copyright symbols are flippin hilarious :) THANK YOU for takin the time; made my morning.

To the point of Comedy Central, I always look forward to South Park myself, and just off-handedly skip over the ones I can't take (Hanky, anything abortion, and a few of the Slap-The-Christian ones--oh, and the plastic surgery episode is difficult, but I force my way through it, because I love the point of it). But the Scientology episode made me respect the show in a new way. "Sue Me!" he screams, again and again ... Ah, America, baby.

And then they pull this ...

Fix it, Comedy Central! Fix it quick! Don't take defeat from the jaws of victory! And hitching your wagon to Cruise is just dumb business--more money in lampooning him than in supporting him, or at least the wind blows in that direction. Be capitalists, for Heaven's sake!

(Paragraph about Scientology® deliberately omitted by author for courtesy in brevity of posting, and replaced by this sentence, so I could write Scientology® at least once anyway :)

Glad the humor wasn't lost.Anytime Axe.

Uh guys, I just received a call from Tom Cruise's lawyer who said that they are drawing up a lawsuit as we speak, if I don't remove this post and comments immediately. Sorry. They said that if I want to put up a post bashing Christianity that would be fine, but mocking Scientology® was way over the line.

I've also been told I must personally apologize to Xenu, and you all should as well.

Well get to steppin' Randy. The battle for our souls against the Thetans has only begun and from what I understand it is going to be about a million year battle.

Haha, theteans.... even that word is obnoxious.

yeah, pretentious and scientology go hand in hand.

Update: March 23: Chef is Dead. Darth Chef is born :) Good-bye chef! Have a blast making sweet love in Heaven. Or whatever. (snif) Had a blast. (snif) Was fun.
