Lodi Terrorist Trial Begins Today

Remember the possible Lodi terrorists? Well we don't ever hear much in the mainstream after the arrests of terror suspects, but here's what's happening in this case, via KXTV:

(partial excerpt, read more here)

A 23-year-old Lodi man is either a trained terrorist awaiting orders to commit jihad or simply a lazy, unambitious man who was a big storyteller. Those two opposing portraits were painted this morning during opening statements in the trial of Hamid Hayat in federal court in Sacramento.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Ferris told the jury "the government will prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Hamid Hayat attended a jihadist training camp in Pakistan, that Hamid Hayat returned intending to commit jihad in the United States."

The prosecution outlined Hayat's activities in Lodi, his trip to Pakistan and his return to Lodi where Ferris claimed, "He was in fact awaiting orders."

In outlining the evidence prosecutors will present in the case, Ferris talked about a key witness named Naseem Khan, a government-paid informant who came to the U.S. and began working for the FBI shortly after 9/11. Prosecutors said conversations between Hayat and Khan were recorded in the spring of 2003 and later that summer when Hayat was in Pakistan. in those conversations, Hayat talked to Khan about the training camps and how to get into them, weapons and the Taliban, prosecutors said. "[Hayat] told Naseem Khan jihad is the duty of every Muslim. He swore he was ready," Ferris told jurors.
